The Islanders signed former Islander Andy Hilbert and Springfield’s Rob Hisey to one-year, two-way contracts Wednesday. Two centers, so that may well fill the donut hole for the Sound Tigers.
Hilbert, somehow 29 now, spent most of last season with Houston after spending most of the previous four seasons in the NHL (including those three years on the Island). He scores in this league, 242 points in 272 games, to go with 22 points in 23 playoff games (21 of those points in Providence’s 2005 playoff run).
At an alleged 5-foot-9, Hisey probably has diminutive center attached to his name like Wayne Chrebet had “Hofstra’s” on his. Still, he has scored everywhere he played. He revitalized the Falcons last year and put up 25 points in half a season.
Edit: All the Twitter-marveling over Hisey’s hands reminds us of what we were thinking last fall: just how close the Islanders are to a playoff berth… in MLL. BTW, as retweeted earlier today, Ben Guite to Columbus, which could put him in Springfield if he’s not up top.
