Soundin' Off

Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Bouncing back after a break

Had that goal counted seven seconds into the second, it would’ve been the fastest goal for a Sound Tiger into any period. The officials talked it over but ruled the net was off before the puck went in off Blair Riley’s shot. From where we sit up here, that play might as well have been in New Bedford, but sounds like the call was right. Either way, good shift.

And actually, at even strength, one more time, they had a few good shifts. They just didn’t score, and special teams made a difference in the wrong direction.

They hit the break on a six-game losing streak. It’s incredible to look over the lists and realize that, of the eight longest winless streaks in team history, four of them happened in this calendar year.

Brent Thompson said the break couldn’t come at a better time. Probably true; given two full weeks off, maybe DiBenedetto and Colliton and Gillies are ready to go. They’ve mixed and matched with the penalty kill, with the power play, and though they have hung in at times, they’re still on a skid.

They’ll have a week to regroup.

….

Thanks for bearing with me here and on Twitter. Internet went down just before faceoff; we didn’t get a replacement until the third period.

Bridgeport hasn’t scored in 144:11, since the Howes goal late in the second period Friday in Hartford. The longest since the lockout: 173:44, Oct. 18-24, 2009, which coincides with the last time Bridgeport was shut out two times in a row, Oct. 20 and Oct. 23. For back-to-back nights, you’re going back to Jan. 14-15, 2005, a pair of 4-0 losses, here and at Hartford. The only time they were shut out three times in a row: Oct. 27, 29 and 30, 2004, on the way to going 20

Good tilt between Riley and Randell. Have heard the Riley-Carroll fight is one to find from last night.

The team is off for the break; a player or two seemed to be departing from here. We’ll plan on the Tuesday chat, though.

Tim Leone with a two-parter on Hersheypark Arena’s 75th birthday. While we’re in Hershey, Joel Rechlicz scored a goal and got into a fight at the same time, and he apparently had little or nothing to do with the Bears’ five-goal-against collapse in the third period. Perhaps Bridgeport softened them up. Trevor Smith with the winner.

And RIP, Vaclav Havel.
