Katic, Kinasewich and gaming with Klementyev

Jack Capuano said this morning that Mark Katic is going to need surgery on that left shoulder. It’s a shoulder that has been injured before, and it certainly didn’t look pretty on Friday. That will reportedly end his season.

So while they move on without three of their four season-opening power-play defensemen, Ryan Kinasewich arrives. As it appeared yesterday, he slotted into Jesse Joensuu’s spot today alongside Trevor Smith and Greg Mauldin. Sounds like he’ll get every opportunity on the power play.

Afterward, Trevor Gillies roped Anton Klementyev into a little wager: Around the World. Shooting from the hash marks, they had to hit posts in order: left, crossbar, right, then back again, right, crossbar, left. Klementyev agreed. So Gillies stepped up, and bam! Left post and crossbar, right off the hop. Klementyev answered with the left, but hit the back bar. Took Gillies a couple of tries to nail the right, but he got it. Then Klementyev needed a few tries, but he finally got the crossbar. Gillies started his way back. And then Klementyev got hot. Got the right. Then got right and crossbar. Gillies was sweating. He missed his, and Klementyev nailed the left, wheeled his arm around, skated off to the boards next to the bench in Shelton and did a full-bore Ovechkin into the glass. Gillies, angry and required to buy lunch, collected his sticks and muttered his way off the ice.

Albany-to-Charlotte becomes official today; Pete Dougherty’s blog already has plenty about it. (Over the weekend, as I’ve kept forgetting to link, he noted that Rob Hennigar is done for the year.) Ron Chimelis had the Republican’s report today on what the Oilers’ departure means for Springfield.

Edit: Admirals Short Shifts, the other half of the James Sixsmith AHL News Network and a fine source on the Rumored Conference, has moved.

Another great hockey story from TV writer Earl Pomerantz.

And so true, Alice.
