Soundin' Off

Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Law-talking guy*

As seen on CapGeek and from Katie Strang and in the comments: Nathan Lawson returns for another year, re-signing with the Islanders.

And, obviously, one of the stories of camp(s) now officially becomes “where do you find minutes on two teams for five goalies that don’t include your injured No. 1?” (The return of said No. 1 could force a move. Further injuries could make the question moot. Would Utah come into play — and for some more than others? It’s a fun problem to have. There, I think I just wrote it. I’m not even supposed to be here today**.)

A few elsewhere notes:

–Jonathan writes about a certain kind of NHL double double: 10 fights and 10 goals. Only four in the NHL last year, and 12 in the AHL (including the incoming Jeremy Reich). The Sound Tigers, near as I can tell, have only had one in their history. (Oh, heck, name him.) Part of the reason is that, a couple of times, they barely made it to 10 fights as a team.

–Mike York moves to Rochester; Mike Keane stays in Winnipeg.

–If you’re a folkie, then by all means check out the Chad Mitchell Trio and Roger McGuinn performing “Whup Jamboree,” “Dona Dona Dona” and “Hello Susan Brown”*** on the Bell Telephone Hour. If you’re not, you might get a chuckle out of the beginning and the end, which seem from here to be so very early-’60s.

–And here’s how quickly the biz is changing: A few of these, I never even used. We still use many of them, though, albeit some in slightly altered senses. (And it’s always fun to talk about “refers” in mixed company.)

*-9F20; so eminently quotable that this exchange didn’t even make the capsule. (It’s Season Four, of course.)
**-I’d link to the time we were throwing around “Clerks” quotes, but that was a kind of dark epoch…
***-As noted here: “This is a Southwestern play-party song. Play party songs were designed to protect young people from the evil business of square dancing.” This song is on their At the Bitter End live recording; the backing included McGuinn and former Weaver (and Weston resident) Fred Hellerman. If I ever sit down and do a list of concerts I wish I’d seen, this will be high on the list. Another track from that album could be the subject of an even-more-off-topic blog post soon.

Wait, what time is it?

  1. Add University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds’ captain Dustin Friesen to Utah roster, has been invited to tryout for Bridgeport in September.

  2. Gotta be Kevin Colley for the double double.

  3. Utah’s coach in 04/05. Godard almost did it too, which would have been remarkable. Heck… they put him on the top line for awhile and he ended up with 7 goals.

  4. Indeed, Colley had 11 goals and 11 fights in the lockout year. He had 12 goals the year before but only eight fights.
