So we’re told Garth Snow has not yet granted Russia permission to take Anton Klementyev in preparation for the World Junior Championships.
But get this: The reason, from what we’re told? Snow is holding Klementyev over their heads, hoping to get the federation’s help in getting Kirill Petrov out of his Russian contract and over here.
So we’ve got us some international intrigue as a sidebar to that Rick guy tonight. We’ll see what we hear tonight.

Way to go Garth. I feel like Ak Bars is ruining Petrov.

Great idea on Garth’s part, but if this works to any extent, I’ll eat my hat.
If it does, you get twofold affirmation. First, and most obvious, is that Petrov will be coming to North America, a huge coup of course. Second, Klementyev is apparently good enough that he brings that kind of leverage to the bargaining table.

It should be noted Petrov was demoted to start the season by Ak Bars, he was allowed to participate in the recently concluded Subway Skills Tournament in North America now he will likely play again for Russia at WJC.
To call him a regular with Ak Bars this season would not be true, they are paying him not to play there at this time. Nor is signing him to an Islander-Bridgeport contract in season (beyond PTO) even feasible unless the rules are being rewritten again?
As for Klenentyev, his WJC status should have nothing to do with this, he signed here and Snow is obligated to look out for his best interest.
I have no doubt that will happen.
