Nice Work Lucia and Kodie

Join me in congratulating Jonathan Law High students Lucia White and Kodie Daigle,
two seniors who excel in the arts. Lucia’s on the left.

The girls were honored at the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) High School Outstanding Arts Awards Banquet held last month at the Aqua Turf in Southington.

The CAS Outstanding Arts Awards Banquet annually recognizes two seniors in each
high school for outstanding ability in the performing or visual arts. The students are
chosen by their school to receive this honor. The banquet, with over 1,400 in
attendance, was sponsored by Jostens.

Well-Deserved Honor For Jerry Patton

Jerry Patton, the founder of the Milford Hall of Fame Committee and the Rotary Club’s oral history project received the prestigious Community Service Award from the Freelove Baldwin Stow chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on Thursday night.

A longtime state representative from Milford and a local businessman, Jerry has been the guiding light behind several of the more interesting recent developments on the local history front. His interviews with notable Milford citizens highlight the city’s past and recreate bygone times through the people who lived through them.

I highly recommend that you watch several in the Milford Memories project, which is underwritten by the Milford Rotary Club. The DVD collection is available for loan from the Milford Library.

It’s been nearly five years since Jerry approached several other history buffs and all of the living ex-mayors about honoring a Milford resident from each century of Milford’s long history. Check out the plaques in the first floor main corridor of the Parsons Government Center to see how that project is coming along and be on the lookout for the announcement of this year’s inductees.

And don’t be surprised if someday Jerry’s many local admirers dedicate a plaque there in Jerry’s honor.

Congratulations to Julia and Dolly

Two Lauralton Hall students, Julia Elia, ’12, of Milford (on the left) and Dolly Canevari, ’13, of Stratford, were selected to participate in the 2012 Connecticut Music Educators Association All-State Music Festival last month.

Julia and Dolly competed with other highly talented students from across the state and were judged based on a prepared solo, scales and sight reading. They joined more than 500 student musicians from high schools across Connecticut in Hartford, where they rehearsed with the choir and then performed in a concert on the last day of the festival, April 14th.

“Julia and Dolly are both exceptionally talented musicians,” says Margaret Sargent, Lauralton Hall’s fine arts chairman and the girls’ teacher. “It was a great experience for our students to be able to work with other talented musicians from the entire state and to be in larger ensembles led by outstanding conductors.”
