James Maroney Will Run in 119th District

Democrat James Maroney, the majority leader of the Board of Education and the owner of First Choice College Placement Service, has announced his intention to seek the 119th District General Assembly seat this fall.

Rep. Dick Roy, D-Milford, who has represented the eastern end of the city for 18 years, is not seeking re-election. A redistricting has changed the district’s boundaries, and those two elements have heighted interest in the race.

Fellow Democrat James Patterson and Republican Pamela Staneski, both former aldermen, have also announced their candidacy to succeed Roy.

Proposed 2012-13 School Calendar

The Board of Education plans to vote at its March 12 meeting on a calendar that would have an opening day of Aug. 29 and (weather permitting) a closing on June 17.

The calendar has a holiday break from a half-day on Friday, Dec. 21 to Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013.

February vacation would be from the 18th through the 22nd, and the spring break on April 15-19.

Three “snow” days are built in; after that make-up days would come from the February vacation.

Things Have Changed

A poster in the Planning and Zoning office advertises waterfront lots in the city’s Burwell Beach neighborhood, just to the west of Woodmont, for $98, with $10 down.

Monthly payments could be as low as $5, the offer by the Pearl Development Corp. says.

Before you rush down there, the land sale offer was from the early 1900s, before World War I.

DAR names history essay contest winners

The annual American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution asked students to pretend that they were alive during the War 0f 1812, and knew someone who had stood up for America during that time.

Students were also asked to explain why it is important to honor such heroes as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. Books For Birthdays

Press release from Tammy Jackson at the Literacy Center:

Books for Birthdays celebrates the joy of reading by presenting a new or gently used book to a needy youth each year on his or her birthday.

A birthday is a very important day for children. Yet for many of our youth, the day comes and goes without any acknowledgement or presents. While there are many wonderful donations made so kids have gifts around the holidays, there is, sadly, little recognition of the day that recognizes the value and worth of each individual – the birthday.

The Literacy Center of Milford has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Milford, Boys and Girls Village and the Milford Resource Center to launch this program. Following the Center’s successful Books for Babies and Books for Toddlers programs, Books for Birthdays is the next logical step.

With all of these programs, the importance of reading is highlighted as a fundamental necessity of personal development and future achievement. By making books available in the home, needy youth are given access to a significant societal equalizer – literacy.

The Literacy Center of Milford asks residents to drop off new or gently used childrens books at the Literacy Center at 16 Dixon St. (Fannie Beach School) in Milford. Financial donations and wrapping paper are also appreciated, as are donations of time.

For additional information, please contact the Literacy Center of Milford at 203-878-4800 or director@literacycenterofmilford.com. www.literacycenterofmilford.com
